The few adults who don't wear glasses socially were usually made fun of as children and this are self-conscious about it as adults.
There is a trend here in the US of wearing plain glass glasses to look more intellectual, so it goes both ways. |

A father-figure is someone like a father to someone who never had one.
noun:
an older man who is respected for his paternal qualities and may be an emotional substitute for a father.
example - "he had been a father figure to her since she was a child" |
