Your competitors aren't getting any more government money than you are. As for retirement, look into evening and weekend classes, part-time casual university study, hobbies that you now have time for. All the books and other media you never got a chance to experience, you now can. All the places you...

otherwise ads would become useless because everyone would be using adblock This assumes that the vast majority of people know anything at all about computers or digital advertising, or have any kind of concept of 'blocker', let alone know how to download something and use it properly. (Also, I'd ar...

With the "20 years" thing, I assume that once all the science and engineering has been achieved and sorted out and all the papers are written and there are actual, real, fully stable and working fusion reactors running in research facilities all over the world, THEN it will be 20 years unt...

Not with today's level of space technology.

If we're talking far-future speculative technology levels, then... maybe? But in that case, how different would it really be to living dirtside? Maybe being able to visit a zero-G room, sure, but the novelty seems like it would wear off quickly.

On the forums, there's a set of page links above the table of posts, thus (or equivalent): "Page 1 of 204 [ 5289 topics ] Go to page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... 204 Next Jump To:" I'd suggest to have this duplicated and also appear directly below the table too. At the moment, in order to browse the ...

Any time I was forced into some afterschool activity and turned out to be good at it, there was always the "encouragement" of "You're so good at it, you could study it and do it as a job!" No. I do not want to do that. I was not doing that thing because I wanted to, it was becaus...

It only makes sense if you were going to do that thing anyway and are procrastinating for no useful reason.

As a pressure tactic, "get it over with" runs smack into the wall of "I was never going to do that anyway, why would I do it now?"

Forum: Work and finding a Job   Topic: Employers discriminating against people who don't drive?

Here, not having a local state driver's license is a way for employers to discriminate against immigrants (aka 'foreigners' or 'non-whiteys') without actually seeming to do so. So you'll see a lot of job ads which mention the need for a local license regardless of whether there's any driving as part...

"Moon's haunted." More seriously, it is kind of a pity that international political tensions were needed to get to the moon, and the momentum just wasn't there afterwards. Look at the result - over half the planet's population has never experienced a moment when a human being was on the mo...

For those wondering: she's only resigned from her in-party senior role. She has neither resigned from the party itself nor from her job. This is more like resigning from being the second-in-command of organizing the Christmas party at your job, without it affecting your actual paid job in any way. (...

No? It's no more cheating than looking up the rules of chess before playing a game. There are players out there who have enormous experience in a game and know all kinds of things. Are they 'cheating' because of their experience? What about if they take someone under their wing and teach them? Is th...

Not American, but from what I can tell from this side of the world, she wouldn't have been a particularly amazing President (or a particularly bad one, as such things go). However, I think any boringly average President - from either side - would have been significantly better than the absolute dump...

With couples, they can support each other through times of low mental well-being. Singles are less likely to have someone who can do this, or do it as often. It's not an absolutely given situation in either case, but it can be a factor. On top of this, there's the societal pressure to be in a relati...

It's not necessarily a huge factor. There may be some prospective dating partners who prefer intelligence, but even then it can be subject to diminishing returns. Raw measurably IQ is not generally attractive as the ability to apply it in the real world; if you can use it to boost your career or sol...
