Even if the experts could accurately sort out their tests to diagnose 40% AS, 30% OCD, 20% Synesthesia, and 10% Narcissism, life experiences could still make you very different from someone else with the same percentages. In practice, we are lucky to even get a shrink to admit that we have more than...

A chairperson facilitates a meeting. A facilitator is more free-range.

I did a start-up, and I got burnt out. There were too many new jobs to learn that I couldn't find recruits for. I'm fine with a loose structure for a project like building something familiar, where everyone can just pitch in at whatever is farthest behind. However, for meetings about how to proceed,...

I think that the differences between the genders run very deep. Individual genetics are highly variable, so our ranges of abilities overlap, but exceptions don't prove a rule. It would be silly for a couple to have identical abilities, when specialists could have a wider range of talent. No venture ...

My mother was AS and didn't like noise. If I was crying, I was just quarantined until I got quiet, but she was my ally for quitting piano lessons. Dad was a handyman, so I got used to swinging a hammer or using power tools, but I often choose quieter options and can work in a house with very minimal...

^^ I have also ridden in the cab of a steam engine at a very young age, and did a course correction and descent in a BOAC DC-3 at age 12. I did them a lot more abruptly than the Captain had in mind, but I think my mother was the only one who noticed, as they were smooth.

The quality of my sleep is uneven. I am often tired, too tired even for things I want to do. Fatigue makes me want to retreat to my bed, sleep and read. If I can’t do that, I am cranky, irritable, have brain fog and make mistakes. I also get fatigue from mild dehydration. I work hard at remembering...

There are a lot of people who claim to understand complex subjects, but disagree with each other about them. Sometimes, it is a matter of caring about different priorities or values, especially in politics, but to a lesser extent almost everywhere. Modern engineering really began when Thomas Young r...

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about." If you have a technical talent, it may not seem obvious to you how much easier it is for you than others. If you come up with a better way to do something that is crystal clear to you, it probably won't be clear ...

I don't like the noise or the high shear stiffness of coated fabric, but when I wanted to see if using silk sheets would help me keep from accidentally losing my blankets at night, I tried using an open sleeping bag as a duvet, with the nylon side down. It feels fine to me now.

On one hand, I associate lack of sleep with good times I didn't want to end. Sometimes it was a party, but more often a project that I didn't want to forget the details of. Those projects had me sleeping only three or four times a week when I was around 20, but I caught up each time. I think I'm als...

I used to work for a company that made emergency survival kits. They wouldn't use the favourite fabric of trendy winter hikers - Gore-Tex. Yes, it does both breathe and shed rain in moderate conditions, but given a chance, it will ice up and then soak your undergarments. Use vents.

Really stiff fabrics restrict my movement and make noise. Polyester makes me stink. Some sweaters used to make me itch. Garish colours or styles. Style when I need insulation more, or less. Clothes that are too expensive to risk getting dirty. Clothes that are the wrong size. Various uniforms.

I had a roommate who was an aspiring artist. He wore dramatic looking clothing. Then he got a job driving Taxi, and he did his best impression of a Taxi driver. Unfortunately, although he may have looked like a Taxi driver, he did not look where a Taxi driver should look, and totalled his cab the fi...
