I think my interest in fire was about average. However, I can get a wood stove going with very little effort.

^^ In the textbooks, the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker are all independent businessmen trading on a level field, and competing against others in their trade. In reality, before long, one competitor gets ahead through chance, and this sets up a positive feedback, driving out the compe...

You must have a winning ticket to collect the prize. Which brings up a valid point: If people posting in this thread are so good a predicting the future, then why have none of them won the lottery? Lottery results are no more likely to show up than any other data. These folks have receivers, but no...

My best counsellor was barely qualified academically. I think she just had a natural talent. I call it remedial parenting. Children have a wide range of talents. There was an orphanage of 140 residents that had been bedlam for years until one new girl arrived and within a week, she had all the older...

I got my 3rd shot recently, and didn't even get a slightly sore arm this time. The reaction the next day was about on par with the low point in a normal week of random fluctuations.

Nuclear has never been as cheap as coal, and now both wind and solar are cheaper than that. We were sold reactors to subsidize the production of atomic bombs. The more activity in the nuclear field, the more opportunity for both accidents and crime. Nuclear waste is an ongoing problem, like a deadly...

Capitalism is not what makes us prosperous; that's just a parasite agitating the trade and technology that have made our species totally dominant. It is also the force that is driving us into climate disaster, as the rich feel isolated from consequences. We are currently living on oil, but we could ...

Fortunately, the gig economy is getting people back to using their wits to fulfill niche markets. Having owned a small business, that's easier said than done. The state, or at least my stat...

<snip> Besides, getting good grades is good idea anyway in terms of your future. Sure, most of the things they teach you is the stuff you don't need, and a lot of what you do need they might not be teaching you. But, right or wrong, colleges look at your GPA when they make admission decision. So it...

Therapists work for the child if the adults are recognized as abusers, but they may wait until there are alternatives available that happen to be approved.

How the hell are you supposed to maintain sanity, with all this insane s**t going on? Well, sanity is somewhat a matter of opinion. The more people who believe something, the less sane disagreement looks. However, I have always found a firm foundation in logic and science by doing it myself. I once...

Once, I saw a "tea room" and went in, wanting a cup of tea. The main business there was the reading of the tea leaves, but I was the only customer, and was able to order just the beverage. Then, the lady didn't have enough change. I said I'd get change and return. I left my folder on the t...
