The more I dug into the case, the more complex I realized it was. Which is why I want to trust the judicial process. Yes I have opinions, but I don’t see them as solid enough to share. What I also don’t see are any heroes, just misguided idealists that I remember feeling (mostly) unintentionally wor...

“When he was shot” works. But we use “victim” with all sorts of violent actions. Stabbing victim. Assault victim. It takes gymnastics to never use the word. The person who holds the gun is the shooter, and the person who gets shot is the victim. For whatever reason it never took off to call them th...

My problem is that we don’t have another word for it. In the English language, the person who took a bullet is a shooting victim, without regard to his innocence or guilt in other matters, and without regard to whether or not there was justification for the shooting. I don't think that tracks, we d...

If the shooting was self defense, the people who were shot were not "victims", they were in fact perpetrators, and as this trial is being held to determine whether the shooting was in fact justified, premature use of the term "victim" would prejudice the jury against the defenda...

^^^ I am curious how your family viewed the same interactions. But it won’t change the fact they failed you. In one way if not the other. I wish you could understand that your perceptions are not reality in most families. And I wish your childhood experience had been profoundly different than it was.

I never gave either of my kids screening lectures or revoked privileges for bad academic performance. I simply asked them why they thought they had gotten the disappointing grade and then supported them. ... We never had whiskey in our house. I hardly ever drink at all; I’ve always had medications ...

The supply chain interruptions and gaps here in the US are hit and miss. Our cats’ favorite food is a miss right now; trying to buy a new car is difficult. A convergence of world wide factors and some poor decisions.

My children’s generation is fully embracing the “need less, use less” mantra. Nothing else fully adds up, and they know it. Resale clothing instead of new, bikes instead of cars, etc. It’s my spoiled generation that doesn’t know how to do it, and the relentless need to grow economies. We simply can’...

Nuclear proved hard to control. Waste disposal issues and the extensive damage (and death) from even relatively small accidents caused it to fall out of favor.

There really is only one best answer to our energy and climate change issues: need less, use less.

@badRobot, I understand that you think I use moral licensing. I think context is relevant, that not all situations are equal. There are times your angle applies, and times mine does, IMHO. Both our positions have already been explained in this thread a long time ago, and your persistence became poin...

Ps - As a woman, I am literally offended that you continue to try to make a comparison to sexual assault. Just, drop it. Yes, you are a woman, but you also claim to be a responsible member of this community and ex-moderator. As a responsible member of this community you should be offended by action...

I don’t think referencing a pm was an intentional act. I see it more as an awkward act. Place yourself in Cornflakes shoes (now I get to feel awkward mentioning him because I think these are offline hours for him). Imagine you’ve been having a conversation with a member in pms, and now you see the ...

This is not your judgement call to make. What is ok to you, might not be ok for this member of the forum. Acknowledged, and my opinion modified accordingly once Brictoria posted his feelings (FYI Brictoria’s profile says male). If you’d just read a little further before posting (I don’t usually, ei...

I swear to god, parents literally have no idea how easy their lives are, and how privileged they are! When a parent gets a bad performance review at work, he/she comes home to a comforting hug from his/her spouse and a big shot of whiskey. When a child get a bad grade in school, he/she comes home t...

There were many ways that the desired subject matter could have been presented while not breaching the trust\confidentiality of another person, and would have required much less typing\content in the post. The inclusion of (and disclosure of the existance of) private communication on the subject wa...
