I can see the attraction of using an imaginary father figure to replace the actual caregiver. I suppose religious people never have to come to terms with the idea that they're without a caregiver. But I think a bigger attraction is not having to quite come to terms with human mortality.

I find it stressful and exhausting to stay anywhere new for any length of time. I'm also not good at "switching off" and enjoying the down time. I live alone, so either I'm away on my own feeling like an idiot or I'm visiting someone and making them put up with my weirdness. About the onl...

I've found that silence can have a calming effect. But it's not easy for me to find silence, especially when I'm living in a city. The nearest I can get to it most of the time is when I run a fan or play pink noise through the hi-fi. I find it almost as good as true silence. The brain soon loses int...

25 hours per week sounds to me like a reasonably civilised amount of time to work. I guess it depends on the kind of work. I used to do about 30 hours, but it was science research, probably not the nastiest job in the world. Since retiring I don't know how I managed to work that long. I loaf around ...

Come to think of it, my grandfather had a reputation in the family of having awkward opinions, and of usually being correct.

I don't think any group has ever seen me as its voice of reason. I tend to feel as if I get to the heart of things and have a clearer view of matters than most people do, but I think that comes from having a different way of thinking to theirs. Other people's thinking tends to make less sense to me ...

Some of my dreams are certainly uncomfortable, but hardly ever terrifying.

I've always been glad to be alive except when I was at a very low ebb, which has so far been very rare. I was late being diagnosed so I never saw myself as disadvantaged in that way, and I still don't see my main disadvantage as being ASD or any other health issue. I'm very quick to whinge about the...

I don't often feel that most people actively dislike me, but I do often feel that they aren't especially fond of me. I suppose most people have a rather mainstream ideology going on, and that puts up barriers between me and them. So it's probably not surprising if most people don't especially like m...

Being unhappy both without and with a job tends to be pretty common. It usually means that you haven't been working jobs that you're well-suited for. Or, that you haven't figured out how to declutter the brain afterwards. It may be somewhat cultural, but the only time I've been happy while unemploy...

I can relate to not being happy with a job or without one. Wouldn't be so bad being unemployed if the benefit payments were dependable. I've never had a problem with being jobless as such, and always liked having the time to myself, but the anxiety surrounding benefit stability was at least as bad a...

I use pink noise from an mp3 player. Sometimes I use a recording of a thunderstorm.

I can be very sensitive to noise. Even the tiny bit of noise my pillow makes in response to my breathing and heartbeat, even a slight "whistle" sound from my nose when I breathe.

Historically I always started out being very loyal and "stuck," but I didn't tolerate being treated badly forever and always pulled the plug if it got too painful to stick around, although it was often very hard for me to do that. I've rarely kept in touch with ex-partners. There's often b...

I'm usually keen to be able to see and hear my surroundings if it's an unfamiliar or crowded place, just to make sure I can react quickly enough to sudden "hazard" situations. I've never yet worried about what people think of sunglasses, though I only normally wear them when there's bright...

I get some pleasure out of it, and a change of environment seems to do me good. But the logistics of planning a complicated journey can spoil a lot of the fun by way of stress and fatigue, and I also don't like it when my environment goes out of control in bad ways - I'm rather sensitive to some cha...

I'm not much of a fan of T-Pain but he's consistently demonstrated he can sing without autotune, as much as he's also very much known for heavy autotune use. Yes, when I found out that Picasso was perfectly able to draw and paint realistically, my respect for him went up a bit. It's hard sometimes ...
