If you are talking numbers of dead then communism certainly is up there. But when you dig a little deeper then I tend find whether it be Ceaucescu, Castro, The Kims of North Korea, China or Russia, the motivation is always authoritarianism, control and self-interest at the expense of the populace w...

Having them ask you for assurance of heaven would be a bit of a nightmare in that case. I don't see why you couldn't say 'I have no way of knowing' or 'If there is a life hereafter I'm sure you'll be okay'. I obviously don't know your personal circumstances but I get the sense that options such as ...

I don't take too much notice of Wikipedia, that's just random people writing what they think. Of course it's wise to check out anything that anybody writes, but I've not found anything much wrong with the pages I've read. If an assertion in an article hasn't been backed up by citations, it's soon l...

A long time ago when I was less sure of the invalidity of supernatural beliefs, I told a friend of my concern that I was so undecided about such an important question and was mindful of the fact that I would die one day and therefore needed to know the answer. He said (I paraphrase) "I think i...

In my case I'd be telling a massive whopper because I see the afterlife thing as extremely unlikely, so to say it was a mystery would be almost 100% dishonest of me. And I was assuming the dying person wanted to be strongly reassured that they were going to the Good Place. I think I'd be quite happ...

Don't know why lying is needed here exactly? In my case I'd be telling a massive whopper because I see the afterlife thing as extremely unlikely, so to say it was a mystery would be almost 100% dishonest of me. And I was assuming the dying person wanted to be strongly reassured that they were going...

i will admit to taking great comfort from the "new agey" stuff, it gives me a peace of mind i could not get elsewhere, that all my travails on earth wouldn't be for nothing. and after all, isn't how it makes you feel the ultimate arbiter of good and non-goodness, as long as nobody else is...

Most people are “klutzes” in these situations. i STILL don't know what to tell a dying person. Have you ever seen a movie called "The Invention Of Lying?" Set in a world in which lies are unknown, the protagonist, an atheist, tells his frightened, dying mother that she'll go to the...

What do you lot think about Emotional Freedom Technique/Tapping? I was very sceptical but it does actually work and it's free to do so it's a win:win. According to Wikipedia it doesn't work, apart from a placebo effect, though I gather placebos can work wonders. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotio...

The first religion came about when the first scoundrel met the first fool. Possibly. But are you familiar with the theories that the human race is naturally superstitious in the first place? I suspect the evolution of religion wasn't entirely a matter of foul play. I suspect that foul play is an im...

My biggest issue is the bots in certain websites. You set up a profile, make a post, and the feedback and direct messages come from mostly bots. The worst ones are ones that pretend to be lonely horny women to promote some sort of dating scam. If it's not too personal a question, which websites are...

But how can one ignore all the crazy lies, misinformation, propaganda, trolling, and death threats on social media? I often have to remind myself that those things exist. I hate dishonesty enough to have very effective ad blockers and suchlike utilities, and to steer clear of the more obvious cessp...
