One does not have to be conservative or right wing to want to cancel people for “conservative” reasons. The internment camps have particular resonance with “conservative” .

I deleted your examples prior to 1970 as the pervasive moral and ethical framework of society was different so not relevant in 2021. I am surprised you would even bring these to the fore given that conservative right wingers are at great pains to use that precise argument to justify cringeworthy things (I actually remember the backlash against disco in 1979, I'm not sure if you remember how the country music billboard tried to cancel music from black performers as recently as last year on some flimsy pretext that black music is hiphop).

The more recent examples of left wing cancellation are not that compelling. I am happy to go through them one by one. Lets start with black students protesting police violence. One of the things that right wingers do is rush to get data which shows mixed evidence that police target black people. There's just one problem. Police records (especially prior to the introduction of bodycams) were filed by police. Black people have been saying for more than a hundred years that police fabricate reports to incriminate innocent people, or exaggerate resistance to justify using extreme force.

White police officers are driven not just by implicit bias against blacks, black people are an easy target. Police officers want promotions or justify they are are on active duty then all they have to do is fill their quota by grabbing the nearest black person for jaywalking, or a group of black teenagers for selling marijuana, or go to a public disturbance and escalate the incident in order to make arrests. it's the oldest trick in the book.

In my OP I wrote about cancel culture:
“It was the conservatives that wrote the book. All the wokes have done is written the updated edition”. What conservatives did prior to 1970 is completely relative to my intent in starting this thread.

As far as recent left wing cancellations not being compelling I would find such a thread interesting.

While the President of Sonoma State apologizing for allowing a black student to criticize police violence is technically not a cancellation, it was done after the fact, the fact that he thinks he should have cancelled her is an example of the hypocrisy being pointed out.

It is as general as me stating conservative critics of cancel culture are a bunch of hypocrites and leaving it that. I would find a thread giving examples of specific recent incidents described as cancel culture that you find not compelling interesting.

I'm not saying individuals of a left-wing persuasion aren't governed by ideology to the point they might overstep the bounds of common sense. This has happened before (I'm reminded of Al Gore's hypocrisy in not practicing what he preached).

But I would prefer to deal with individuals rather than a supposed "culture" of wokeness.

2021 - Texas Anti Abortion law
What’s Next for the Extreme Texas Abortion Ban?

Quote:
But S.B. 8 takes the unprecedented step of empowering private citizens to police their neighbors, placing at least a $10,000 “bounty on people who provide or aid abortions, inviting random strangers to sue them,” according to a federal lawsuit challenging the policy. So on top of being unconstitutional, S.B. 8 incentivizes vigilantes to sue strangers on suspicion of abetting abortion.

I am only focusing on “cancel culture” within the entertainment industry.

The best example of this by the “woke left” would probably be the Apu controversy on the Simpsons.

Mostly such culture comes from the right.

According to the petition - we are deeply disturbed that the principal assigned to the school blatantly showed Satanic symbols and her allegiance to Satanic practices on her public social media platforms where all the students can see them under @edenprincipal (not her personal account).

How is this different to teachers who post pictures of themselves in bikinis or innapropriate garments using their school account?

it doesn't have to make any sense, it's just their policy.

Schools have policies about conduct of teachers and social media accounts have been used to fire female teachers in Australia (which is a country considered fairly liberal/progressive) for teachers posting pictures of themselves in lingerie or bikinis.

I make as many Canada jokes as any red-blooded 'murican, but that aside, I don't really think Canada is all bad. The only time I'm sincerely critical of Canada is when liberals make Canada out to be some utopia that has solved all 'murican problems. It has not. Canada has problems, same as any society. So when someone pops up singing Canada's praises and how superior Canada is to the USA, I point to the inaccessibility of free health care to some and to the poor treatment of First Nations peoples. The truth is that Canada's socialized health care system probably is superior to ours in terms of actual delivery, though both Canada's and USA's system are fatally flawed in principle. It gets comical when a leftist points to American racism without acknowledging their own. That's when I pull out the Critical Race Theory*** playbook and show them the absurdity of their comparisons.

***I don't actually buy into CRT. I think CRT is one component of a socialist agenda, the same old thing rebranded and restyled. The absurdity of "Canada Is The Promised Land" lies in the absurdity of leftist claims. In other words--nobody is perfect.

Thankfully the idea of Canada as some sort of liberal utopia seems to be mostly limited to American liberals and progressives, although my ex Tsion definitely was one of those people when her and I started dating.
