What I feel are key points, exerted directly from the article unless otherwise noted:
Quote:
The most serious allegations remain unproved

But the present stalemate, in which one side treats the subject with polite indifference while the other side foments and fundraises off it, is unsustainable. Maybe it will be broken by the Justice Department, which is reported to be conducting a wide-ranging criminal investigation into Hunter Biden, examining whether he violated various tax, money-laundering, and lobbying-disclosure laws.
Quote:
Whether or not he turns out to be the perpetrator of a crime, he is certainly the victim of a violation — an invasion of privacy that is staggering in its totality. Even the people who are responsible for disseminating the laptop admit that, on a human level, what happened to Hunter is horrifying. “A lot of stuff I do, I don’t feel great about,” says one of them, Steve Bannon. “But we’re in a war.”
Quote:
My observation from details in the article: Hunter was in a very bad place, personally, when he dropped off that computer.
Quote:
In right-wing circles, these texts have been construed to suggest there was a formal revenue-sharing agreement between Joe and Hunter, though looked at in a more forgiving light, they can be read as hyperbolic bitching.
Quote:
It proposed a corporate structure in which Hunter would own 20 percent of the company, with another 10 percent “held by H for the big guy.” The big guy, many on the right believe, was Joe Biden.
Quote:
There is little else on the laptop to suggest that Joe Biden profited from, or was even fully aware of, his son’s business activities. In 2017, the former vice-president was a private citizen, so partaking in the deal wouldn’t have been illegal
Quote:
And for all the time they have spent scrutinizing his emails and his dick pics, Maxey and others have yet to find any incontrovertible evidence of criminality
Quote:
Steve Bannon said that people who possess the laptop tend to read their own obsessions into it.
Quote:
At the same time, Mac Isaac said he was frustrated that so many parties, known and unknown, had ended up with copies of the hard drive, which he said had been modified considerably.
So after reading all that, my positions on the saga haven't really changed.
1) Hunter is not a political candidate. As such, his actions aren't really our business IMHO.
2) IF Joe Biden made money off illegal actions by Hunter, that could be another issue. But two problems: (a) no proof that he did get a share in any deals and (b) no proof that any of Hunter's deals were illegal (even if shameful or politically toxic).
3) The Justice Department and FBI have access to the original laptop and all the data it contains. Given that Hunter does not hold office, those are the appropriate agencies for determining if anything criminal occurred. Again, he's a private citizen, so the bar is criminal activity, NOT actions damaging to his reputation. And, as we know, government agencies ARE investigating Hunter.
4) I find it absolutely shameful how we tear up family members of politicians who don't hold office themselves, or work for their relative's administration. The man is vulnerable, we all already know that. But he is still a private citizen. Private citizens should not have their lives exposed to the public in this way. Is he protected from consequences on any criminal activity? No, and he should not be. But that so many people are digging into and watching intimate details of his private life really bothers me. I'm consistent on that: I want us out of Melania and Barron Trump's personal business, too. We have no right to be voyeurs to the lives on people who never put their names on a ballot. I realize its nothing unique to the Biden's that the US seems to love this type of gossip, but that does not make it morally right.
5) The information the public has access to is no longer reliable. Too many hands, too many opportunities for data falsification and corruption.
