The shocking thing is, how much I see hijab in US, where the society in no way forces its use upon anybody.

WHERE in the US do you see THIS?

The immigrant population is growing in the US from Muslim countries.

I see young ladies from Muslim countries wearing hajibs, and decades ago there was a fad of native born ladies wearing Arab style scarves ala Yassir Arafat (not quite hijibs, and certainly not burkas).

In France they FORBID you to wear hajibs, and burkas.

In Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc, they force you to wear them.

Here in the US its kinda "UnAmerican" to do either thing (to either forbid, or require it- despite the local dislike for extreme covering).

See them in the nearby park all the time, see them in stores. I don't go to many other places and there are no Muslims at my workplace.

Used to see them both in high school and in college.

If you truly understand the historical meaning behind the islamic hijab itself you would understand that it represents oppression and sexual slavery of women by itself. It is like wearing some pro-holocaust badge or something.

Sure they are free to wear it but that doesn’t change what it represents. The nazi or holocaustic jewish badge may be fashionable in some parties but that don’t change the fact what they originally stand for.
The free world shouldn’t encourage it in any way.

I believe it's Qur’an 24:31.

I find making hijab mandatory something horrible and unacceptable - yet banning it is not in line with what I find "free world values" - particularily, freedom of religion.

In the "free world", it should be only up to the individual involved.

I ll explain since apparently you don’t know: The hijab in the time of Mohammad wasn’t simply just an act of chastity; it had by far a more sinister meaning:
- Only free women of Mohammad’s rising new sect were supposed to wear hijab. It was mark that these women are not slaves.
- Sex slaves (women) on the other hand were NOT allowed to wear hijab, actually they were forced to be topless too and were punished otherwise.

So the hijab by itself was a sexual status symbol. It originally had a classist and an extreme objectification and *ownership* meaning: private vs public. True it became a more simple chastity thing later and I bet most muslims nowadays don’t even know its original meaning.

Yet radical movements (ie. ISIS) are aware of the truth and they do behave accordingly toward non-veiled women (ie. “available” for raping with no remorse).

So knowing that, the West shouldn’t really applause for it; it should be burnt for what it truly represents, like how the Iranian women are doing today.

As you argue yourself, even most muslims today don't realize this origin and see hijab as a simple symbol of chastity...
So I think the problem is not with hijab-wearers but with radical ISIS-like guys who blame the women they rape. BTW, the problem of victim-blaming in sexual abuse is not limited to Middle East or hijab. Of course, giving the abusers ideological "justifications" makes it a thousandfold worse.
Still, the problem is entirely on the side of the abusers.

Personally, I am increasingly knowing women who removed their hijab by the day; and apparently they know about the slavery original symbol.
Those women have by far a harsher tone regarding hijab than yours, magz. Actually they see it as an insult to all women.

And I fully respect these women. I want them to fully enjoy a freedom to burn their hijabs in full safety once each of them decides she wants to.
That's what "I want it to be a choice" means.

I was interested in possible available sources of knowledge of pre-islamic veil laws and I found this:

It was already ancient at the times of Muhammad but I wouldn't be surprised if the custom was still practiced.
