Singer Gwen Stefani, who was born to an Italian American father and Irish American mother in California, claimed in a bizarre new interview that she is Japanese — despite having absolutely zero ethnic ties to the country.
The No Doubt lead singer explained to Allure magazine Tuesday how she visited the district of Harajuku herself before releasing her now-controversial Harajuku Lovers collection in 2004 and realised she’s apparently Asian.

So, how long until she declares she is a victim of the nuking of Nagasaki?

I think she's adopted the identity. But as with Rachel Dolezal if there isn't in-group consensus from Japanese people then I am not sure how far she can take it.
But self-identification is harmless. She is welcome to identify as anything. I self-identify as an alien.

Back in the 80s when the song came out a guy I worked with explained to us in the warehouse that "turning Japanese" is slang for masturbation "because you squint your eyes when you do it", or at least guys do.
I dont know if the ladies squint their eyes or not. Gwen might well...remain Caucasian!

One of the more misinterpreted songs of all time, word was that "Turning Japanese" refers to the Asian facial features people get at the moment of climax during masturbation. In a VH1 True Spin special, they asked The Vapors about this song, and they explained that it is a love song about someone who lost their girlfriend and was going slowly crazy. Lead singer Dave Fenton said: "Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to." It was inspired by Fenton's relationship problems

Oh, so it has a double meaning? I didn't know that. I assumed the song was about Japanese tech = turning Japanese. The song itself was incredibly racist, I won't repeat the lyrics here.

I just googled the lyrics. There isnt anything "racist" in the lyrics that I can see.
The music is indeed punctuated by that Hollywood 'doo da doo da doo-- dot doo dot doo' motif that old movies use to signal 'east Asian', or "Chinese". But thats too stupid to be offensive IMHO.

I have a hard time with people "identifying as" things they are not. "Psychotic" is the a word for when you cannot tell the difference between your thinking and reality.
I realize this is an unpopular position to take. I will probably get flamed for stating this opinion.
I think it is important to accept one's self for what one truly is.
I realize that not everyone agreed with this.
I was expressing to a woman who had a Ph.D. in Social Science (and a teach position at a college in the same subject). She replied "That is Essentialism. I reject Essentialism because of what it means to Feminism." Hard to argue with that.
I guess that I might have replied: "I reject Feminism because of what it means to Essentialism".

Weird how she doesn't put her money where her mouth is and live in Japan. She's been like this for years. Even when I was in school a lot of kids thought she had an obsession with Japan.
