A 5-year-old British girl who had half her brain removed at the age of 17 months has taken her first steps, according to a report in Britain's Telegraph.

Cordelia Cowsill of Greenfield in Greater Manchester, U.K., was born with a rare condition called tuberous sclerosis, which causes tumors to grow in the brain and other organs, and caused Cowsill to suffer up to 70 seizures daily.

Doctors removed the right side of Cordelia's brain in an attempt to control the condition. The operation has a 50 percent success rate, according to doctors.

Despite the odds, the child, who was delivered five weeks early at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and weighed just 5 pounds, 4 ounces at birth, is now walking and playing games, parents Amanda and Martin Cowsill told the Telegraph.
