Why coffee don’t wake up alot of people? My afternoon coffee doesn’t work very good, I’m still tired, my eyes can be so tired, my eyes can make my head hurt.

Coffee works too well for me - gives me the jitters, makes it hard to sleep and upsets my stomach. It's too bad because I really love the taste of coffee with creamer though. :(

I am high-functioning, so I don't need coffee, nor do I want to become dependent on it.

Caffeine can be processed differently by different people; like any psychotropic substance (and caffeine technically falls under this umbrella), physiology must be considered. Liken it to alcohol: some people have naturally higher tolerances or can process it faster than the rest, or have "trained" their body on higher levels. Any drug, if taken regularly, with decrease in effectiveness for the same dose. Caffeine actually blocks certain receptors and activates others, almost replacing certain hormones produced. You would become dependent on it for normal function, which is why quitting anything cold-turkey is physically difficult.

Also, if caffeine could replace decent sleep (as a lot of people try and make it do), the meaning of "open 24 hours" would be very different; nothing would ever close.
