but if you were to be a first-time listener of TtR, would you have thought that ringo's goof was musically bad-sounding? or just different?

Like I said, I never noticed it until Rock Band ;)
But I never really paid any attention to drums until I started playing plastic ones. After that, I would frequently air drum (or pencil drum) along to music.
It's funny how much "drum beat" was in my guitar playing style, though, without even meaning to.

I think a professional drummer hearing it for the first time would notice it, it's very distinct. It doesn't sound intentional, it just sounds bad. If you listen to them play it live, he does the correct drum pattern the whole way through (practice makes perfect!).

Everything in this video says "What are we even doing???", I love it.

Ringo gives up during the "mess up" part and just starts poking around his snare with the sticks. Paul keeps trying to "sing" the wrong parts. George is there (he forgot his 12-string, though!).

A guitar is primarily a stringed instrument, you can also use a guitar as a percussion instrument.
Sam has combined all this with a lyrics about autism.

The first two verses, the drum pattern follows George's 12-string lick.
I don't know how to write drum annotation, and my timing on the correct pattern isn't 100% precise, but it's basically like this:
Code:
1    &   2     &    3    &     4     &
kick     snare kick kick snare       tom
1    &   2     &    3    &     4     &
kick     snare      kick kick  snare tom

Bottom is the verses after the first bridge.

i listened again, and again i didn't hear anything non-musical issuing forth from his drumkit. sure there was a bar or so here and there where he used a fill rhythm at the beginning rather than between bars. but it sounded appropriate.
