I ask this question because a psychologist has told me on a few occassions, "Hmmm, that's interesting, you're not supposed to be able to do that", referring to me being sarcastic and understanding irony. What is everyone's take on it? Can we do it? Have I been misdiagnosed? *preparing for wall of silence* :(

Yes, they just (myself included) are often not as good as interpreting it as non-Aspies.

Believe it or not, the only problem I've ever had with either of these is using them too much to the point where people don't understand MY sarcasm. And, for the record, my sarcasm is always perfectly clear. How's that for irony?

I recall not really using sarcasm until about 9 or so. Maybe it was that car crash, I don't know. Anyway, I guess that was just a turning point in my life. Before that, I was AS, NO DOUBT! After that I was AS, but things were less defined. Anyway, I certainly DO use sarcasm, and understand most of it. I STILL think it is stupid though. I always understood ironic. My whle life has been ironic.

I am quite good at both.

Interesting.......would be interesting to know how Doc got that idea. Have you been told something like this before by a medical type?

Are people clicking on the last option because they understand it or because they're taking it literally?

I'm in the same boat as Seigneur. I can be a total wise-arse, and can even appreciate it in movies and such. But I never know if someone's serious or not when joking with me, and I usually take it personally.

I'm very sarcastic, but have difficulty figuring out when others are being sarcastic. This gets me laughed at a lot, and probably leads some people to believe that I'm not very smart.

I don't think I could have achieved a Master's in English without knowing how to use irony, metaphor and idioms. As for sarcasm, I can use it only when I'm angry, and then it sounds awkward and stupid.

Oh, I love sarcasm and irony, those are my favourite forms of being funny! I can't tell you how often I'm sarcastic, and all my jokes are irony ones. Your doctor should meet up with me sometime. I'll show him what Aspie's can/can't do!

For those who don't know what it is, I remember when my friend was teaching me to fit in better (think of it as making the wooden circle out of rubber to make it fit into the square hole of wood): He said sarcasm is lying by telling the truth. Best saying Eva!! !
