Louisville activist arrested in Butchertown shooting targeting Mayoral candidate Greenberg

Quote:
Craig Greenberg, a mayoral candidate in Louisville, was targeted in a shooting in Butchertown on Monday morning, prompting Louisville Metro Police Department officers to close down Story Avenue, LMPD Chief Erika Shields confirmed.

Louisville Metro Police identified 21-year-old Quintez Brown as the suspect of Monday morning’s shooting at Greenberg’s office.

Brown is a Louisville activist and University of Louisville student who went missing for more than a week back in July of 2021.

Police said Brown has been charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment in relation to the shooting.

Shields said 911 calls about a “active aggressor” were received around 10:15 a.m., prompting police to clear the building housing Greenberg’s office, which is close to Butchertown Market and the JBS plant. There were shots fired, and while Greenberg was not directly hit, a bullet did penetrate his clothing. Investigators cleared him and his staff from the building, and Shields said no one was hurt.

Brown has been apprehended, but police do not know what motivated the shooting.

“We have no reason to believe this individual was acting any way but alone,” Shields said. “As we get more information we will certainly make it forthcoming. We consider ourselves very fortunate today.”

Shields said it is unknown whether Greenberg was targeted because he is Jewish, a political candidate, or for any other reason.

Are we dealing with someone who has mental issues or is venomous? We don’t know,” she said. “We have to really keep and open mind and be diligent in taking care of our community.”

Louisville Metro Council President David James initially confirmed to WAVE that Greenberg was targeted in the shooting but was not hurt.

On Twitter, Greenberg said he is safe:

Greenberg addressed reporters on Monday evening providing an update on the incident. He stated the suspect had walked into his office and was greeted by himself and four other team members when the suspect aimed his gun at Greenberg and began firing.

One of his team members who was closest to the door was able to shut and barricade it. The suspect then fled from the office.

Brown is a well-known activist and organized youth protests during the social justice movements of summer 2020. He often wrote opinion columns about race relations in the Courier Journal.

He was also the subject of a missing persons investigation last June. Brown had went missing in late June 2021, leading to a citywide search. He was eventually found, and his family had asked for privacy while they focused on his mental, physical and spiritual health.

Brown recently announced that he was planning to run for Metro Council's District 5 seat.

And so it begins, the praxis of social justice.

Activist Quintez Brown arrested, charged in attempted shooting of Louisville mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg

Quote:
Brown has been charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment, according to a Louisville Metro Police spokesperson.

The 21-year-old was identified as “a former intern and editorial columnist” of the Louisville Courier-Journal by the paper itself, where he wrote that he had studied philosophy and Pan-Africanism while studying at the University of Louisville, where he'd previously served as the opinion editor of the school’s newspaper, the Cardinal.

While Brown’s motive remains unclear, Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Erika Shields said that early evidence suggests that the shooter “acted alone” and deliberately targeted the Democrat.

Brown wrote his first column for the Courier-Journal in 2018, describing how he’d staged a sit-in at a local high school to demand the termination of a school official who’d used racially insensitive language.

He went on to pen dozens of columns for the paper, writing largely about racism, poverty, and violence.

In his penultimate column for the Courier-Journal, titled “How the American education system destroyed me as a Black student,” Brown wrote, “I’m America’s bright future. I’ve become another symbol of neoliberal progress where my title and my ‘recognized’ name will give hope to those in desperate need of food, security and shelter.”

“And thus I’ve become destroyed,” he concluded. “No longer myself. But another tool of oppression.”

Mayoral candidate shooting suspect found with multiple rounds and magazines

Quote:
The suspect accused of trying to kill a Louisville mayoral candidate was found with loads of ammunition, according to a newly released police report.

Quintez Brown, 21, who now faces charges of attempted murder and several charges of wanton endangerment, was found a half mile away from the campaign headquarters where the shooting occurred, the report states.

Police say they got a call about an active shooter at the Butchertown Grocery building in the 1200 block of Story Avenue around 10:15 a.m. Monday. Twenty minutes later, a man matching the description given by witnesses was stopped. Brown was then identified.

Brown, they said was carrying a drawstring bag which contained a 9mm Glock handgun, a Glock handgun case and additional handgun magazines.

Police also found a loaded 9mm magazine in Brown’s pants.

The report states Brown’s clothing and bag matched the surveillance video gathered from Story Avenue. They also collected several spent casings inside of Greenberg’s office, as well as additional evidence, they said, showing Brown directed the shots at Greenberg.

Brown was a known activist who often wrote opinion pieces for The Courier Journal. He was actively involved with the Youth Violence Prevention League, Black Lives Matter and an outspoken critic of police. He was also a registered candidate for Metro Council District 5.

How a Black Activist Went From Rising Star to Charged With Attempted Murder

Quote:
When Quintez Brown was charged with attempting to murder the Democratic frontrunner to be the next mayor of Louisville on Monday, it marked a shocking turn in the life of a promising Black activist who disappeared last year before running for office himself.

The violent incident, likened to an assassination attempt, came after Brown veered toward increasingly radical politics in recent years, meeting just last week with a representative for a Black nationalist paramilitary group.

While none of the five people in the office were injured—a bullet did graze the back of the Democrat’s sweater—a judge on Tuesday set bail at $100,000 despite Brown’s lawyer pointing to mental-health issues and a lack of criminal history.

Brown pleaded not guilty, and his attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Attempts to reach his family on Tuesday were not immediately successful.

A former intern and editorial columnist of the Louisville Courier-Journal, Brown wrote in the paper that he had studied philosophy and Pan-Africanism while at the University of Louisville. There, he'd previously served as the opinion editor of the school’s newspaper, the Cardinal, and is an MLK Scholar.

Brown’s affiliation with Black Lives Matter and social-justice issues led to his being featured on MSBNC in 2018, where he spoke about wanting “common-sense gun reform.” He was also featured by the Obama Foundation as a “rising face,” and participated in the former president’s “My Brother’s Keeper” program, becoming one of just 22 students nationwide invited to the inaugural gathering of the “My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.”

“I have seen the consequences of poverty and centuries of systemic racism and oppression, and I believe in the potential of everyone,” Brown said in in a statement still posted on the foundation’s webpage. “I cannot stand by silently while I see the lives and potential of my brothers and sisters be cut short due to systemic injustice. Our brothers need hope. Our brothers need positive role models. Our brothers need mentors.”

Social media posts from the last decade show Brown pictured alongside such luminaries as the Rev. Al Sharpton and Kentucky Senate candidate Charles Booker, a Democrat. In a 2021 Twitter post, Booker described Brown as “a brilliant young scholar” who spoke at his Senate launch years prior.

On Tuesday, Booker released a statement obtained by The Daily Beast acknowledging his link to Brown, whom he said he last saw in the summer of 2020. “The young man I knew then was working to end violence in our city, not carry it out,” Booker said.

Brown’s defense lawyer, Rob Eggert, insisted to a judge on Tuesday that his client’s clean criminal record and strong ties to the community should be a case for his release despite the violent allegations. Noting that Brown has a history of mental health issues—and that he plans to have him evaluated—Eggert also pointed to the fact that the defendant is still a senior in college.

However, the judge ultimately concluded that Brown was a danger to the community and set his bail higher than what prosecutors originally asked for.

Brown’s more recent social media posts, particularly the accounts associated with his campaign for a seat in the Louisville Metro Council, show an increasing interest in Black nationalist and pan-Africanist leaders. He frequently posted photos and quotes of the Black Panthers, Stokely Carmichael, George Jackson, and late Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah.

“We have one scientific and correct solution, Pan-Africanism: the total liberation and unification of Africa under scientific socialism,” his Twitter bio reads.

He even appeared to urge followers last week to join the Lion of Judah Armed Forces, a gun-toting group whose leadership has voiced ideas similar to those of the Black Hebrew Israelite movement. The latter anti-Semitic ideology holds that Black Americans, not Jewish people, are the true descendants of the Biblical Hebrews. Adherents of the BHI movement were charged with murdering four Jewish people at a kosher supermarket in Jersey City in 2019.

A local spokesman for the Lion of Judah Armed Forces told The Daily Beast he first met with Brown last Thursday, though he said the accused never became a member of the group. He affirmed the organization’s Black Hebrew Israelite beliefs, but maintained they did not endorse the attack or have any foreknowledge of Brown’s plans.

“We are terribly heartbroken over what appears to have been a humongous lapse in judgment,” the spokesperson said. “The Lion of Judah Armed Forces in no way advocates anything of this nature.”

In January, shortly after filing to run for the Metro Council, Brown posted a “Revolutionary Love Letter” to his Medium account, in which he expressed his disaffection with mainstream politics and politicians.

“By expecting someone else to take full responsibility for our liberation, these reactionary so-called Black leaders are committing an act of political suicide,” he wrote. “The revolutionary consciousness of the masses must understand that the struggle against the negative forces of genocide and fascism will not end at the ballot box of the ruling class. Attempting to get within one of the two major parties has caused our leaders to become co-opted with their interests shunted to the background.”

Kentucky records show that Brown’s campaign for Metro council had yet to report raising any funds.

Man charged with shooting at mayoral candidate leaves jail after local nonprofit posts bond

Quote:
The Louisville Community Bail Fund posted the $100,000 bond for the man charged with opening fire at a Louisville mayoral candidate's office Monday morning.

At his arraignment Monday, Judge Annette Karem raised Brown's bond from $75,000 to $100,000 and said if bond was posted, Brown would be released to home incarceration. Attorney Rob Eggert said in court that he planned to have a psychiatric evaluation for Brown, whom he said has "serious mental issues."

Surrounded by loved ones, Brown left Louisville Metro Corrections just before 8 p.m. Wednesday after getting his ankle monitor at the HIP office.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell said it is "frustrating" that his office "has such little control in these situations."

The Louisville Community Bail Fund collects donations to combat the financial barriers for people "who find themselves against the criminal justice system." Its website said, "Cash bail is one of the aspects of the criminal justice system that keeps communities wrapped up in systemic slavery and in debt. The need to end cash bail is not new."

In Frankfort, the State House is considering a bill to make charitable bail illegal in Kentucky, but some organizations are pushing against it. House Bill 313 was introduced in January by Rep. John Blanton, R-Salyersville, and Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Louisville. If passed, the bill would outlaw services provided by groups like the Louisville Community Bail Fund.

Man do I have mixed feelings about the bail, as on the one hand I've never been a big fan of pretrial detention and bail generally, but on the other a mentally disturbed man who shot at a politician in public seems like the very definition of a threat to the public, and maybe not the best use of a charitable bail fund.

They let the Dallas school shooter out on bail and he repeated. I’ve no issue with giving bail except there are still people that walked thru the open doors on the 6th still being held in jail. The lady with the scales is peeking under her blindfold.

US candidate 'traumatised' by bail for gun suspect

Quote:
A US mayoral candidate who was shot at during a campaign meeting this week has blasted the decision to grant bail to his alleged would-be assassin.

Mr Greenberg said it indicates the "justice system is clearly broken".

"It is nearly impossible to believe that someone can attempt murder on Monday and walk out of jail on Wednesday," Mr Greenberg said in a statement on Thursday.

"If someone is struggling with a mental illness and is in custody, they should be evaluated and treated in custody," he said.

Mr Greenberg said the release of Mr Brown has left his team and family "traumatised again".

The mayoral candidate last month released plans for a "community-oriented police force" and more mental health treatment as part of his platform for public safety in Louisville.

In December, Mr Brown announced his campaign for a seat on the Louisville Metro Council.

On Wednesday, Louisville Community Bail, a group associated with Black Lives Matter Louisville, posted Mr Brown's $100,000 (£74,000) bond.

A spokeswoman for the fund said they were concerned for his safety in jail.

"Jail is a final destination for black folks in this state," Chanelle Helm told the Louisville Courier-Journal. Mr Brown is a former columnist for that newspaper.

In Washington DC, Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell also condemned Mr Brown's release.

"Less than 48 hours after this activist tried to literally murder a politician, the radical left bailed their comrade out of jail," Mr McConnell said.

The group that bailed him out, Alliance for Global Justice, has a interesting history, bailing out cop killers, illegals. Some guy on twitter looked it up, wonder if the msm will publish it?

“White Adjacent” means in “woke” circles not really white but close enough to mooch off of “white privilege”.

In this case I think a more simple thing is going on. Black guy arrested, lets assume he is innocent and being framed because he is black.

Now if I was a the politician he tried to shoot, any prominent Jew, or any open white Jew in Louisville for that matter I would be nervous about a guy let out on bail who has had an apparent mental breakdown, expressed viewpoints that only Black Hebrews are real Jews, the white ones are interlopers, and shot at a Jew. But that does not matter to the BLM funded bailout organization.

Most of BLM claims that we do think that all lives matter but are only saying “black lives matter” to point out that black lives do not matter is a bunch of BS.
