Kazuki Takahashi was found dead Thursday in Okinawa while snorkeling.

It's easy to poke fun at Yu-Gi-Oh (a pastime of even its most devoted fans), but the story and card game have really touched a lot of people. Takahashi created YGO because he wanted a story of an awkward kid who is able to use his love of games to make friends and protect those he cares about. Yugi Moto is a very autistic-coded protagonist, and it meant a lot for kids on the spectrum to see someone like them make friends and become more confident in himself without compromising who he is.

Takahashi will be missed.
