I am glad that did not happen as it would have brought an immediate U.S. military response and who knows what after that.

A country that invaded its neighbour was also seriously considering invading their other neighbour... how completely unbelievable /s

Most likely, before they chose their actual target, they ran similar analyses on a pretty long list of countries (I wouldn't be surprised if such analyses were practiced by some other countries, too), only the one about Japan leaked.
Who gains the most from this leak? Japan - possible international approval for rebuilding their intelligence services and maybe army. Don't forget not only Russia is pointing rockets at them and they're still demilitarized after WWII.

That was probably among the reasons they ultimately chose not to.

Yeah. Its in character for Putin to toy with doing something like that. Confront a neighboring country over territory.

I reckon there is about 0% chance that any Russian ever seriously considered invading Japan. Particularly in 2021!

If this is at all true, then Putin's sanity has been way overestimated for a long time.

"Attacking Japan" is not the same thing as "invading Japan". Nobody said anything about "invading Japan".

The issue is that might have sent military forces to the disputed islands on the geographic fringe of both countries to bully Japan into ceding the islands to him.

Agreed.
Sounds like prime bull dust to me.
I have been known to be wrong in the past, however. 8)

Yes, context is important.
What was the context of the article?

Something more similar to Crimea 2014 than Ukraine 2020, maybe kind of an inversion of it (they have practical administration but not military forces, the opposite to Crimea before 2014)... certainly some relatively small move in the north, not a full-scale invasion on Tokyo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salami_slicing_tactics

From what is leaking now, Russians didn't even plan a full-scale war against Ukraine - that's why they didn't mobilize the army and industires sufficiently early - they expected it to really be a special operation resulting in Ukrainian state quickly falling apart.

The "special operation" against Japan would be probably even smaller. Some bullying.

Come on this is just a wishful fabrication to try to get Japan to open the Eastern front, or at least try to divert resources there.

It's a child's plan, really.

Kuril islands is a permanently frozen matter, and not all that valuable to the Russians, minus just sticking it to the Japanese for the prior invasion in the early 1900s.

Yawn.
